Supernatural: "Dog Dean Afternoon" Review

Ahhh. This episode was a pleasant, relaxing soak in a classic Supernatural bath. All the hallmarks are there: the Winchesters are on the road working a case, there's a sleazy hotel room, and we get blood splatter. It was fabulous – even if I was skeptical at first. This is the second episode in a row that's taken a departure from the primary arcs about demons and angels, and while it's probably time to get back to the meat of the story next week, this was a great rest stop.

Getting to see Dean embody the characteristics of a dog was hilarious. His act brought tears to my eyes in the first few minutes alone. Jensen Ackles does goofy well, so much so that he made a seemingly ridiculous idea work. He's always a smart aleck, but he doesn't get the opportunity to play straight up comedy often and he should. Dean the animal whisperer is an act that just played so very smooth. They walked the line with the silliness and only really crossed over with the poodle scene.
