The Untapped Potential of the Miiverse
Jul 25th 2013, 00:22

Whether you call them Trophies, Badges, Points, or whatever label a platform has chosen to try making the idea their own, Achievements have taken the industry by storm. The system-wide recognition of accomplishing certain goals within our favorite video games was popularized by Microsoft's Xbox 360 all the way back in 2005, and has since spread to numerous other platforms, from the rival PlayStation 3 to Steam, and even on down to Apple's iOS Game Center platform. Even playing Words With Friends on Facebook will prompt you to let the world know when you've played a particularly good move.

However, there has been one holdout throughout Achievement-mania, and that is Nintendo.

The Very Best of Comic-Con
Jul 25th 2013, 01:12

San Diego Comic-Con came and went with a whole bunch of madness in between. If you followed IGN's coverage last weekend, you might have noticed that there were quite a few notable pieces of news that came out of the event.

You can still see all of it over at our Comic-Con index, but we thought it'd be fun to break down the best of the best across movies, TV, and comics.

The surprise of the con, Warner Bros.' reveal that the sequel to Man of Steel will actually be a Batman/Superman movie shook Hall H like Krypton in its final hours. We know almost nothing about the film aside from the fact that director Zack Snyder and scripter David Goyer will be back, and that it is scheduled for 2015. Oh, and that it's going to probably be called Batman Vs. Superman. Yes, the Dark Knight returns…

Gosling, Efron Rumored for Star Wars
Jul 24th 2013, 23:21

Well, if this rumor is true then some fanboy somewhere is sure to have a conniption.

Latino-Review says director-producer J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm are eying Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron for roles in Star Wars: Episode VII. "As for what role Efron would be playing, we don't know. He could be a Solo kid. But what I was told for sure is the Gosling went in for Skywalker's son. Yes, that's right Luke's kid," claims the site.

EarthBound Review
Jul 24th 2013, 23:39

During an introspective moment, EarthBound reminds us that, "There are many difficult times ahead, but you must keep your sense of humor." That quote represents this seminal role-playing game's tone and pacing – it skillfully juggles a noticeable juxtaposition between moments of almost punishingly difficult battle against a dark Lovecraftian apocalypse and silly lightheartedness, and never makes you wait too long between them. Main character Ness and his compatriots combat sentient piles of barf, help two monkeys fall in love, stumble upon a planning meeting for EarthBound 2 (such a tease!), and so much more. It all comes together incredibly well. The true definition of a classic, EarthBound is as amazing and challenging a role-playing game today as it was in 1995.

DiCaprio Interested in Robotech Movie?
Jul 24th 2013, 23:39

Rumor has it that Leonardo DiCaprio has been approached about starring in Warner Bros. long-gestating Robotech movie.

What lends some credence to the rumor is that DiCaprio is old pals with Tobey Maguire, who is producing the Robotech movie and starred opposite Leo in The Great Gatsby.

Latino-Review claims Leo "wants to do" Robotech enough that he turned down a role in Star Wars: Episode VII to pursue it. Nick Mathieu was hired earlier this year to direct Robotech.

Larfleeze #2 Review
Jul 24th 2013, 22:47

Larfleeze_2-665x1024Larfleeze #1 was a refreshingly humorous and upbeat take on the character, a bright spot in the epic drama that is the Green Lantern franchise. The second chapter still has the same sense of humor and whacky art style, but it's missing one crucial element: Larfleeze. This issue centers mostly on his manservant, Pulsar Stargrave, and while he is enjoyable, he doesn't have enough going on to supplant Larfleeze as the lead in his own book.

Superman #22 Review
Jul 24th 2013, 22:44

Superman_22-665x1024Well, isn't that surprising? A pretty good issue of Superman! A heap of credit goes to the team of Eddy Barrows, Daniel HDR, Eber Ferreira, and Geraldo Borges, who absolutely kill it on art. Together they've got a very Ivan Reis/Gary Frank vibe going on and I totally dig it. They make Superman still look iconic despite his youthful New 52 age, while also making the villains as creepy as they ought to be. Great art can make a big difference, and for this title, it makes a ginormous one.

New Avengers #8 Review
Jul 24th 2013, 22:40

New-Avengers_8If this issue doesn't get you pumped for Infinity, then nothing will. It doesn't get you excited with the usual over-the-top stuff you're used to, but rather builds up the tension with a series of scenes filled with a palpable sense of horror. The Namor/T'Challa feud comes to a head, Iron Man witnesses something shocking, and we even get a tease for our antagonists-to-be. I don't know about you, but I can't wait for Infinity and beyond.

The Origins of Axe Cop
Jul 24th 2013, 22:21

Even if you're a fan of Fox's Sunday night Animation Domination lineup, it's hard to ignore the fact that it's mostly just The Simpsons and various Seth McFarlane-produced shows. What about people who crave something different? Luckily, there's a new hero in town, and he'd rather slice bad guys than make off-color references to 1980's pop culture.

His name is Axe Cop.

Axe Cop makes its official debut this Saturday as part of Fox's Animation Domination HD lineup. But the franchise has been going strong for years in the form of a web comic created by two brothers. If you're wondering what all the fuss is about and why a cop wielding an axe is so special, we're here to help. We're looking back at how this comic book phenomenon got its start and what you need to know to enjoy the animated series.

Ultimate Comics X-Men #29 Review
Jul 24th 2013, 22:37

Ultimate-Comics_X-Men_29I want to like where this story is going, but I am still confused about Jean Grey's character motivation. She seems to have become a power hungry villain on par with classic Magneto, yet we've never been clued in to exactly how and why this happened. Brian Wood has done a great deal to setup World War X, and now he begins to quickly ramp up tensions with a crippling attack on Utopia. Crazy-Jean aside, this story is every bit as smart and tense as you'd expect from a writer like Wood.

Beware the Batman is already finding its groove with its second episode, "Secrets," as the Caped Crusader once again implements his ace detective skills (although there's no sign of Ace the Bat-Hound) in his pursuit of not-terribly-famous villains during the early years of his career.

Fifty Shades of Grey Producers to Steer Gran Turismo Movie
Jul 24th 2013, 01:04

What with the popularity of Universal's Fast & the Furious franchise, it comes as no surprise that Sony's putting pedal to the metal on its own car movie based on its existing Gran Turismo video game series. What might raise an eyebrow, however? The Gran Turismo movie is being steered by the duo behind the upcoming movie adaption Fifty Shades of Grey.

That's right folks, Fifty Shades of Grey producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti are at the wheel of the upcoming car flick, according to The Wrap.  No other details have been revealed at this stage, but Gran Turismo will join Dreamworks' upcoming Need for Speed movie, Legendary's Hot Wheels and of course, Universal's existing Fast & the Furious franchise in the race to be King of the 'fast cars, fast women' genre. Not that there are many fast women in Polyphony's Gran Turismo; it will be interesting to see how a somewhat dry driving simulator can be translated into a thrilling action-packed car movie.
