Once usually turns familiar fairy tales on their head, but they decided to leave the story of The Little Mermaid mostly traditional (well, according to Disney's interpretation). It worked too. I feel like that movie has a special place in so many hearts that it made sense to essentially leave it alone. They did throw in just a touch too many nods – like the phrase "under the sea" being mentioned more than once – but overall, the homages just made you smile.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher was impossibly adorable and plucky as Ariel. This episode's story made you adore her, dislike her, and then love her with an engaging arc. Who else cheered when she stabbed Regina in the neck? That was the best scene so far this season and maybe the most satisfying one in the entire series. She was everything I pictured a live action of the cartoon to be, and I can't wait until she finds her prince in Storybrooke.
