Warning: Full spoilers for the Always Sunny Season 9 finale follow...
As proof that too many cooks can semi-spoil a stew, Always Sunny's Season 9 finale, "The Gang Squashes Their Beefs," felt a bit underwhelming. Not that bringing together a rogue's gallery of past miscreant characters didn't wind up causing a whirlwind of chaos, fire, and hurled hatchets, but overall it felt flat. To me, The Gang is funniest when they're dealing to their own internal craziness and not other folks' insanity. This isn't a hard and fast rule, mind you, but it certainly felt on display in this episode.
The premise itself - The Gang deciding that the vast amount of enemies they've made over the years has impeded their ability to rent videos and eat sandwiches - was a good set up. And a funny angle to wrap a Thanksgiving episode around. And bringing back desperate scumbags like Cricket, the McPoyles, Hwang, Gail the Snail, Ponderosa, and whatever the name of Zachary Knighton's sad sack character is (IMDB has only ever listed him as "Random Guy") certainly gave this season finale an "event" feel. But aside from a handful of laughs, it just didn't add up to much.
