Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #1 Review

Any Marvel fan worth their salt knows that when Galactus shows up, stuff is about to get real. Real dangerous, cosmic, and exlodey, that is. However, the characters of the Marvel Ultimate Universe don't have much to go on because the 616 Galactus is so vastly different than their own -- which is precisely why this issue is nothing but Miles Morales and the Ultimates being completely blindsided by the sheer chaos and destruction that comes with ol' pointy hat. While the feel of this issue is uncomfortably close to the black mark on the Ultimate U that is Ultimatum, it manages to steer clear of graphic death shots in favor of giving us some nice character work.

The last time we saw Galactus before he came to the Ultimate U. was in Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF where he was a much more complicated and thoughtful character, so it's a bit of a letdown for him to be once again relegated to a generic destruction plot device. In the prelude to this event, Hunger, at least the contamination of the now-eliminated Gah Lak Tus swarm was an excuse for this bland behavior.
