A truly great pilot guarantees nothing. Plenty of shows have come storming out of the gates only to fall off a cliff once it's time to move forward, whether because a director leaves or the crunch of a lower budget and tighter schedule is felt, or the writers simply have nothing left in the tank after the initial hour. Even pilots that are just decent but hint at larger mysteries can quickly lead nowhere and leave us frustrated that we bothered investing any time in them.
I thought Sleepy Hollow's pilot episode was good and showed a great deal of promise, but I also knew that what they were trying to pull off – a mixture of horror, mystery and light comedy – was an extremely tricky balancing act. So while it was an entertaining start, I was still a bit concerned that they wouldn't be able to tread that line and the fun of the show would suffer.
