Jennifer Lawrence will re-team with her Hunger Games director Gary Ross in a new adaptation of John Steinbeck's ambitious 1952 novel, East of Eden.
As reported by THR, Universal Pictures first acquired the rights to the adaptation back in 2004 after the book was chosen for Oprah's Book Club list, although the option lapsed and the studio put together a new proposal based around Ross' and Lawrence's involvement.
East of Eden, based loosely on the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel, is focused on two families over the course of two generations and is set in California's Salinas Valley pre-World War I. Ross reportedly wants Lawrence to play Cathy Ames, the cruel principal antagonist and wife to the book's protagonist, Adam Trask. The role was first played by Jo Van Fleet in the 1955 adaptation starring James Dean; Van Fleet won an Academy Award for her performance.
