Castiel walks among us, and he's got a lot to learn. He's been the source of strength and the Winchesters' get out of death free card for so long that it was a necessary switch. They have to survive without him magically popping in, and we get to smirk at Castiel figuring out to do things like use toothpaste (I don't see those jokes getting old). Win-win. I applaud the tongue in cheek decision for Cas' human name, too.
Misha Collins is handling the change in his character wonderfully. He plays the lost human with such skill that it just breaks your heart. It would have been easy to make his transformation into straight comedy and while we do have the touches of lightheartedness, you can see Cas has the weight of the world on his shoulders while struggling with basic survival instincts.
