With Charming and Hook spending so much time together, this episode easily could have devolved into hero and pirate jokes, but instead their relationship developed more. It was a refreshing change. Colin O'Donoghue does conflicted oh so perfectly, and he even had me fooled with his lies (and I know he's a liar). It turns out he and Josh Dallas do have an interesting dynamic when they're given decent dialogue. Go figure.
Using dreamshade as the connection between the flashbacks and present day was effective. It made the story come full circle, especially since Hook was intrinsic to both stories. Though I'm not sure if Hook is trying to change who he is, I bet the fact that his brother suffered from dreamshade poisoning is what made him want to save Charming. Hook also may or may not have done it to help Emma, but there's no way he could have known how directly it would be to his benefit.
