Ubisoft Kills Online Pass System, Effective Immediately

Ubisoft has dropped its online pass system, effective immediately. The Uplay Passport code needed to unlock the online features of the recently-released Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will now be provided free-of-charge, and Uplay Passports will no longer be a part of any future Ubisoft games.

Like similar Online Pass systems, the Uplay Passport program required players to activate a unique code only available with new copies of the game. Secondhand purchasers, or those who had borrowed the game, would be required to purchase their own Uplay Passport for an additional fee.

Player feedback, however, has seen Ubisoft now shun the scheme.

"Assassin's Creed fans, we heard you loud and clear," writes communications manager Gary Steinman on the Ubisoft Blog.
