GTA's Creator Rebuilt the First Game's Map in 3D

Michael Dailly, original creator of the Grand Theft Auto series, remade the original game's map in GameMaker.

Dailly recently tweeted photos and details of his latest digital creation — an upgrade to the first rendition of Liberty City, made using GameMaker and other custom software he wrote himself. It's certainly not Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos, and there are no announced plans to use the map in a commercial game, but it's a great blast from the past.

Interestingly, though GTA may have looked two-dimensional in 1997, it was actually built in 3D to allow the player to use bridges and tunnels. Dailly's new map looks 3D in a more contemporary sense, and it runs in both WebGL and HTML5 at 60 frames per second. For more updates, check out Dailly's Twitter feed.
