If only one of the two Fantastic Four books could emerge from Matt Fraction's premature departure unscathed, I'm glad it was FF. This series has lost none of its wit or heart with the addition of co-writer Lee Allred. Even the encroaching conflict with Doom the Annihilating Conqueror and the rapidly approaching end-point can't stop the book from exploring a more whimsical side of the Marvel Universe.
Whereas issue #12 read like business as usual for the series, this issue veers away somewhat from Fraction's familiar style of scripting. It's a bit more loose and free-wheeling in its execution. I suspect as Fraction's presence recedes and the series moves closer to the finale we'll continue to see this shift run its course. More than ever, this book explores what happens when the smartest and weirdest kids in the Marvel Universe get together and simply have fun together. The Allreds deliver a terrifically entertaining sequence as the FF members frolic on the Blue Area of the Moon and encounter a temporally displaced Red Ghost in the midst of his ape-fueled shenanigans. But that's not to say there's no plot or deeper material at work. There's a great scene where Scott Lang chastises Alex Power for his recent mistakes and comes to an important realization of his won regarding his role on the team. This issue winds up setting up the final showdown with Doom rather nicely, despite all the hijinks.
