When a character buys it on "Boardwalk Empire," it's rare that the viewer feels a true sense of loss. There are a handful of exceptions of course, but for the most part, given the era and the gangster themes, there's a "detached observer" quality to the series. Even then, one's emotional investment in a character will vary. When Jimmy died at the end of Season 2, some mourned while some shrugged. Not "shrugged" out of apathy for the show, but more for the fact that they didn't see him as an empathetic figure. Despite having been royally screwed up (and screwed) by his mother. That doesn't mean it wasn't a big moment for the show, just not that everyone immediately ran to go scream and cry into their pillow.
