American Horror Story: Coven Premiere Review

October just wouldn't be the same these days without the new wave of Fall Horror TV (that used to also contain Dexter) - which kicked things off tonight with "Bitchcraft," the premiere episode of American Horror Story: Coven. And despite the opening segment, taking place in 1854 New Orleans and featuring Kathy Bates as the soulless Madame LaLaurie (a bit of actual history being injected into the show at the outset), Coven already feels like lighter fare than its predecessor, Asylum.

And this is not a criticism. By design, AHS creator Ryan Murphy intends Coven to feature a bit more humor and not be quite as much of a trudge as Asylum was. And I liked Asylum for the most part, despite its relentless dourness. It just had a few problems with things like aliens and characters running around in circles in a non-stop cycle of escaping and being re-captured. But it was good for a weekly fix of disturbing moments, both shocking and sullen. Coven, however, is a lot more playful. And part of that has to do with the fact that it borrows from more playful sources.
