Tom Hanks might just be the King Midas of Hollywood. Except that instead of turning everything he touches into gold, he turns every starring role he takes on into Oscar-worthy material. That trend continues as the JFK assassination film which he produced, Parkland, opens this week, followed next week by his turn in the titular role in Captain Phillips, a film that dramatizes the 2009 seizure of the MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. Hanks will no doubt be a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar in a few months (we'll see if he even winds up competing with himself in Saving Mr. Banks).
Hanks certainly deserves his own top 10 list to celebrate the release of Captain Phillips. The hard part is narrowing down his incredible career to just 10 selections (As you'll see, we even had to cheat a bit). From clever comedies like Big, Splash and Sleepless in Seattle to gripping dramas like The Green Mile, Road to Perdition, Catch Me if You Can and Philadelphia, Tom Hanks' career is varied and unique.
