In a storyline that was doomed before it began, Barney and Robin resolved to set Ted up with a date for the wedding weekend, offering him three promising prospects. "Knight Vision" began with an encouraging cold open, as Barney compared Ted's conquest to the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. ("Really? I'm the one working with the Nazis?") At the start, this was actually a pretty amusing setup akin to other classic social rules in How I Met Your Mother; indeed, the idea of Ted choosing "poorly" or "wisely" throughout the night made for several fun payoffs.
The execution, though, was a bit hokey, with the Grail Knight inexplicably popping in, Force Ghost-style, to inform Ted of whether he'd made the right decision. Not only that, but Ted -- the real Ted -- would actually shoot looks at the Grail Knight in desperate need of his approval. As a result, these bits just kind of piled on, lessening the impact of each given situation, as Ted seemingly interacted with a figment of his imagination in order to score.
