Debuting Thursday night, Reign is a bit of a departure for The CW. As the network moves more and more into fantasy and sci-fi series, Reign is a period piece, focused on the real life story of Mary, Queen of Scots – albeit with a few notable tweaks to the exact events of her life. Australian actress Adelaide Kane plays Mary, who we meet as a teenage girl, moved from a protected life at a convent -- away from the many who would do her harm -- to the French royal court, and a long-arranged, politically motivated marriage to Francis (Toby Regbo), son of King Henry II (Alan Van Sprang). There, she encounters more danger from those who would discredit her or do much worse.
On a visit to the Toronto set of Reign last month, I joined a couple other journalists for a conversation with Kane. The actress -- whose credits include Teen Wolf, The Purge and Power Rangers RPM (as the cyborg Tenaya) -- talked about taking on this notable role in the series.
