The open areas of the Final Fantasy XIII series have always been a highlight. At this point, it's not much of a surprise when a Final Fantasy game looks great, and XIII and XIII-2's beauty came mostly from the stunning environments throughout Lighting and Serah's journeys. Still, while areas like Archylte Steppe and XIII-2's Dying World were beautiful and expansive, they were exceptions compared to the largely linear paths that made up the rest of the game.
In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix is focused on making exploration more of a priority, and, based on a one hour demo we played this week, it seems like they've succeeded.
Stepping into The Grasslands, Lightning Returns felt more open than any of its predecessors. Instead of simply accepting a mission on one end of the map then running to the other side to complete it, this area felt like a real, breathing world, with tiny villages set up and various side quests to take on. The main storyline here featured Dr. Gysahl, a Chocobo expert who offers Lightning advice on her search for the Angel of Valhalla, a pure white Chocobo that people of The Grasslands are hoping will bring them salvation.
