As a single issue, Avengers #11 isn't bad. It's a mini-caper with some laugh-out-loud moments and a bit of action. Jonathan Hickman reminds us that he can be sublimely entertaining when he wants to go that route. Yet as part of Avengers as a series, this is yet another disparate piece of a larger story. Reading this series feels like putting together a puzzle with your eyes shut.
Frankly, it feels good to have a more intimate story after so many issues involving space travel and omega-level beings. Yet with six heroes, things get a little crowded and we don't get enough development for any of them. Black Widow was the standout character not only for earning priceless reactions from her teammates when detailing her interrogation techniques, but for daring to behave unlike a typical superhero.
