Bates Motel shouldn't exist. As The Shield creator Shawn Ryan said at the Paley panel he hosted for the show, by all accounts, this series simply should not have worked. Certainly the preliminary judgments that we saw online indicated that most people were in agreement: "No good could come of a contemporary-set prequel to Psycho." And yet Bates Motel not only works, but, though imperfect, it is one of the more entertaining and well-executed series that we've seen come along this season.
Like many freshman series, Bates struggled to find its footing, initially. The tone was occasionally fragmented and co-executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) seemed determined to introduce as many dramatic threads and elements of intrigue as possible right out of the gate. There was a sense of desperation to the pacing in moments. Sex slaves, and rapists, and murder, oh my!
