Match-3 puzzlers such as Bejeweled Blitz and Candy Crush Saga have accomplished much, but they feel too similar to me with their single-piece swap mechanic. Simple Machine's free Tomb Breaker offers fresh "match-2" gameplay, which adds, rather than subtracts, with its clever line-drawing mechanics. It has changed the way I look at the genre, even if the game modes are lacking.
Tomb Breaker's big and bright graphics have a casual appeal, but it revels in its fast-paced matching. You simply draw a line to connect as many of the same-colored gems as possible, as long as each two gems are in the same column or row.
Here, Tomb Breaker breaks from the tradition of most match puzzlers in that none of the gems have to be adjacent to count in the connection you make. A connection of four or more gems rewards you with a temporary score multiplier; clearing out all gems of one color yields more points and a permanent multiplier. I crave the huge crossover bonus, which involves connecting gems in such a way that the line I draw intersects at one or more points.
