Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

First off, forget all you know about Sam Elliott. One of the joys of this episode was watching the actor, who portrayed Ron Dunn (aka "Cool Ron/Eagleton Ron"), keep his swagger and his laid-back drawl while playing the absolute antithesis of Ron Swanson. This is one of those rare occasions where a show played against all our expectations, even though our expectations were still that Elliot playing Ron's counterpart would be amazing.

So when the casting news came down a few months back that Elliot would be Eagleton's version of Ron, we naturally assumed that he'd be a better version of Ron. In the way that Eagletonians tend to perfect things. As in, he'd be a better carpenter, a more carnivorous eater, etc. Like a rival. But the way they went with Ron Dunn was to make him a Cat Stevens-quoting, environment-conserving, yoga-practicing vegan (with aspirations of becoming a full "Freegan"). And I'm not sure if I'll experience a more surreal moment in a comedy this year than listening to Sam Elliot quote a Smiths song. "You don't know 'Meat is Murder?' It's probably the greatest song ever written about industrialized beef consumption?"
