Director Alfonso Cuaron's critically acclaimed space survival drama Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, debuted atop the box office this weekend with an estimated $55.6 million, making it the biggest October opening ever.
Gravity was also the biggest opening for its two stars as well as IMAX's biggest October debut. The 3D film also reportedly earned over $27 million internationally.
Meanwhile, the weekend's other major new release Runner Runner flopped. The Justin Timberlake-Ben Affleck thriller opened in third place with a paltry $7.6 million.
