Only time for a quick review tonight, as we prep for NYCC. Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to find its footing, as is natural for a series this early in its run. "M.E. Time" was a mixed bag of repeated notes, small, but pleasing enough, character progression, and hit and miss jokes. Overall, this episode felt slightly less energized than the previous three. There seemed to be an attempt at rapid fire jokes here and there, particularly at the crime scene, but for the most part Peralta's "fat jokes" fell flat.
We need him to be some combination of boyishly charming, charmingly roguish, cocky - but often put in his place - with just a dash of odd in order for the character to work. Dead fat guy jokes just felt cheap. If you're going for the cheap joke, at least make sure that it's so cheap that it's really, really funny. Though it was nice to see the characters in the outside world, Peralta's intrusion on Santiago's date was also a fairly predictable set-up, which didn't yield much in the way of actual humor. We get that these two have very different dating habits - she likes dinner, he likes role play and morgues - and that he's, again, like the schoolboy pulling at the hair of the girl he likes. However, there must have been a fresher, more dynamic way to illustrate the point.
