Green Lantern #21 Review

With Geoff Johns' 9-year run on Green Lantern given a definitive ending only two weeks ago, it definitely feels strange to get the next chapter with a new creative team so soon. But in the spirit of James Bond and Batman, it's always fun to see the next iteration of a beloved character. Robert Venditti takes on the task and delivers a solid start, although not one without a few flaws. Luckily, with Billy Tan on art duties, it all looks spectacular.

After finishing this issue, it's hard not to feel like this was a launching pad for all of the post-Johns Green Lantern books instead of the start to a new Hal Jordan story. We get a look at the new structure of the Corps, Kyle interacts with the new Guardians, and Larfleeze makes a surprise appearance -- which all correlate to the Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Larfleeze titles. I was surprised that Atrocitus of Red Lanterns wasn't squeezed in somehow. Using this tactic no doubt makes sense from a marketing point of view, but it also makes the narrative lose focus at times.
