While Dan Harmon has been speaking openly about his return to Community for a couple of weeks now, it was known that the deal wasn't in fact complete. But Harmon speaking about such things without contracts finalized is a pretty Dan Harmon thing to do, right? And we wouldn't have it any other way.
Now though, any worries about something falling through can be put to rest. With the deal complete, NBC have officially announced that Harmon is returning as executive producer and showrunner with Chris McKenna also returning as executive producer. Amusingly, the press release simply stated Harmon and McKenna were returning and noted "No debut date for the new season has been announced" without any of the usual enthusiastic quotes from the studio, network and parties involved. I'm guessing NBC and Sony have simply resigned themselves to Community being a strange, cult show and they're going to let Harmon do his strange, cult show thing... but they probably won't talk about it much.
