Audiences said "awww, hell, no!!" to Will Smith's new movie After Earth as the M. Night Shyamalan-directed sci-fi film underperformed at the weekend box office.
While no movie was expected to displace reigning champ Fast & Furious 6 as the No. 1 at the North American box office this weekend, After Earth was projected to debut in second place in the $35-40 million range. Instead, it bowed in third place with $27 million behind Now You See Me, which opened with a surprising $28.1 million.
"For nearly two decades, every summer film starring Will Smith has opened at No. 1, an enviable run (Made in America debuted at No. 2 in 1993)," THR recalled. Even Wild Wild West debuted with more and at No. 1.
