Avenging Spider-Man #20 Review

I've been pretty keen on Chris Yost's Avenging Spider-Man ever since the Superior Spider-Man shake-up gave this book its current direction. But while Avenging has generally been superior to Superior, issue #20 is the first instance where the book loses its footing. With too much focus on the Secret Avengers and not enough on Spider-Man or Chameleon, this issue left me feeling a little cold.

Yost shifts away from the done-in-one format for a two-issue arc this time around. "The Chameleon Sanction" sees both Spider-Man and a group of assassins attempt to liberate Chameleon from S.H.I.E.L.D. prison for different ends. Otto's characterization is one of the more bizarre elements of this storyline. For one thing, it's never made clear why Otto is so intent on liberating Chameleon or what his end game is. For another, Yost writes him differently. Otto makes concerted attempts to sound like Peter, even going so far as to crack jokes.
