The end of a recent Pokémon X and Y demo presented a most unlikely finale. After I quickly steamrolled through two nearby trainers, I had a brief meet and greet with the newest Pokémon professor, Augustine Sycamore, and he offered me something I would never forget: The powerful and rare Mewtwo.

The moment triggered a personal flashback, as I recalled the first time I played Pokémon Blue in 1998, and my grueling 40-hour trek to face this coveted 150th Pokémon. I guess I should admit my shame here: I never captured Mewtwo. I had other responsibilities at the time, and an overeager friend deleted my save file, so I refused to try again. And yet here we are, 15 years later, and this slender Pokémon expert just handed over what I considered the coolest creature so many years ago.
