Batman-and-Nightwing_23_Full-665x1024With Batman and Nightwing #23, Pete Tomasi wraps up his exploration of the five stages of grief. This issue is all about acceptance, a theme that's somewhat more overt than the others have been. And what better character to pierce the veil of darkness in Bruce's life than Nightwing, the hero who has fulfilled that function since 1940?

Issue #23 pays plenty of homage to Grant Morrison's Batman work, even recreating several key scenes from Batman Incorporated #9. If that sounds like filler, the simple fact that Patrick Gleason is illustrating those scenes makes the rehashing well worthwhile. Gleason brings a Gothic sense of drama and torment to these scenes that manages to outdo the source material. And as he has so often in recent months, Tomasi nails the emotionally charged scenes adeptly, whether they involve contemplative meditation or outbursts of grief.
