The original Ultimate Spider-Man series was perhaps the first book readers pointed to when noting how modern superhero comics are so fraught with decompression. Peter Parker's origin story, including the genesis of his arachnid powers, the loss of his Uncle Ben, and the lesson about power and responsibility, morphed from the single-page sequence in Amazing Fantasy #15 to an extended six-issue story arc in Ultimate Spider-Man. But that opening arc also proves why these complaints are so often baseless. Brian Michael Bendis lent a great deal of extra depth and richness to that familiar story. Now it seems that Ultimate Comics Spider-Man might serve as an even more ambitious example. Miles Morales' journey from ordinary teen to idealistic new superhero to battle-worn veteran is one that has unfolded over the past two years. And that origin story only truly comes full circle in this 22nd issue.
