If you're a console RPG old-timer like me, you remember how absolutely enormous Dragon Quest II (née Dragon Warrior II) seemed compared to its compact predecessor. Dragon Quest put players in control of a single warrior fighting one-on-one battles in order to save a single kingdom, but the sequel gave you a party of three who slugged it out with teams of monsters across several entire continents (one of which contained the entirety of the first game's world).
The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves (which follows closely on the heels of last year's Denpa Men: They Came By Wave) seems to aspire to deliver a similar impact. Where the first game revolved around nothing more than conquering a series of small dungeons with a team of randomly generated "denpa men," the latest entry -- tentatively slated for a May 2 release on the U.S. eShop -- expands the world significantly. Dungeons now litter a classic RPG overworld landscape, and players take their teams back to a small town which can be customized by cultivating flowers, Animal Crossing style. The denpa men themselves now possess greatly expanded options for combat and customization. And there's even more of a story, goofy as it may be (the hero's wife and children have been abducted by a monkey).
