Side Effects is not the film you've been lead to believe it is. If you want to receive the full impact as screenwriter Scott Z. Burns and director Steven Soderbergh intended it, then my recommendation would be to discontinue reading or looking at any of marketing materials, much less the reviews. Side Effects initially follows the story of Emily and her husband Martin Taylor (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world has unraveled in the wake of his arrest for insider trading. Emily has slipped into a depression as a result of the devastation his crimes wrought on their privileged lives, a depression that worsens following his parole. When a new drug prescribed by Emily's psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) – intended to treat anxiety – has unexpected, and deadly, consequences, Banks finds himself in a fight to discover what went wrong.
