With Star Trek Into Darkness quickly approaching its May 17 release date, it only seems fitting that J.J. Abrams' sequel be provided with a smartphone application daring enough to encourage its users to boldly go where they've never gone before. And from what we saw at Paramount and Qualcomm's recent hands-on demonstration, the Star Trek Into Darkness app is indeed the final frontier of mobile expedition.
To start, this is an application that really pushes the limits of context awareness, utilizing real-world game experiences to complete various missions and earn rewards. From the startup menu, users are given about eight missions at a time. Once a mission is complete, they're given points and access to exclusive movie content (videos, images, wallpapers, etc.) only available through the app. After that, a new mission is added to the queue. (Missions can also be skipped and saved for later, should they decide to pursue a more accessible target.)
