Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...
In the aptly named "The End is Near," Joe, mere moments before the FBI tracked him down, made his big escape from the mansion, setting "The Final Chapter" into motion before fleeing. For the penultimate Season 1 episode, this was pretty good. This show got noticeably better once the whole "hunt for Joey" was over and done with. Not by a huge margin, but better. Especially when Joe's best laid plans started falling apart. But for every cool moment this episode had to offer, I was hit with scene after scene reminding me that I was basically watching more of the same.
Claire stabbing Joe in the same open wound with a fork was freakin' awesome. It made me audibly wince. But the entire scenario was a facsimile. Her turning on him again. Her wounding him again, but not getting the job done. Her running away only to get captured again. More innocent civilians caught in the middle. More patrolmen gunned down. It was all a differently assembled version of everything we've seen on the show so far. Claire's escape led to the Grays escaping, so she did wind up saving their lives, but why were they kept alive to begin with? Why didn't Joe just kill them? Seems like a big oversight. At first I thought the guy was being spared because he was a doctor and Joe had sought out his house on purpose to get some much-needed medical attention. But no, they were left alive arbitrarily. And so, I assume, they'll pop up in the finale and provide some clue that helps Ryan find Claire.
