Green Lantern: New Guardians picks up right where we last saw Kyle Rayner and the new Guardians during Green Lantern #1, although you most definitely don't need to read that book to understand this one. The hippie Guardians want to go on a star tour to commune with the universe and they want Kyle to be their guide. This leads to an issue thick with conversation backed by some spectacular art, with the best part being that it finally gives a clear reason for this title to be called New Guardians.
Artist Brad Walker is the best thing to happen to this title since its debut. He absolutely nails every character design -- he even makes Kyle's often mishandled mask look cool! -- and brings an iconic look to the pages, tinged with his own personal style. The space sharks are fearsome and fun, Kyle's constructs are creative yet practical, and the double page spread of countless space ships approaching "the anomaly" will leave you breathless (is that a rocket ship tree from Saga?). And while Walker knows how to go big, he also handles the quieter human moments with expertise. My favorite panel is the one where, after mentioning his trek into space, the shadows on Kyle's face look like the starry night sky. It's the little things.
