TMNT: Secret History of the Foot Clan #2 Review

I don't know about you guys, but so far, Secret History of the Foot Clan has been my favorite part of IDW's renewed TMNT universe. Though this second issue disappointingly doesn't elaborate on last issue's insane cliffhanger, it does continue to flesh out the Turtles mythology in ways that play up all aspects of the universe. From feudal Japan to sci-fi to the playful teenage banter and antics, Secret History of the Foot Clan #2 nails it all.

Despite its title, this installment is more about the deepening history between Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi, which ultimately has close ties to the Foot as a whole. Whereas last issue delivered the broad strokes of the Foot's history, writers Mateus Santolouco and Erik Burnham get into the nitty gritty and start to explore the history of the two characters that we saw way back in the early days of the TMNT series proper. This issue does a lot for Shredder, depicting him not as a two-dimensional badass but a neglected – and later power hungry – soul that gives the character motivations that we haven't yet seen in IDW's TMNT output. In addition, the banter between our heroes is as solid as ever.
