The Avengers #3 Review

Maybe it's because the video game Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch just released with a stellar review here on IGN, but Avengers #3 reminded me a lot of movies by Studio Ghibli. It showed off a strange place with even stranger creatures, had antagonists that aren't necessarily villains, and introduced us to a young woman whose purity saved the day. That might not sound like usual Avengers fare where they punch Dr. Doom in the head and call it a day, but then again, Jonathan Hickman isn't your usual comic book writer.

This book is written with Hickman's epic verve, but it's Jerome Opena's eye-popping visuals that truly sell it. His realistic art style sells the huge action panels by intimately focusing on one huge punch or laser blast at a time. Just looking at the panels of Hulk fighting Hyperion is enough to make your neck hurt. You would be tempted to describe his composition as simplistic, but that wouldn't give Opena credit for the immense detail he packs into each and every element.
