Sometimes you need a little tough love, lest you be tried as an adult Highlander. I suppose if there were a theme to tonight's Brooklyn Nine-Nine it would be, "Tis better to be punched by the one you love, than duped by a shoe-trafficking psychic" or "Spare the rod, spoil the child." One of the two. Who's to say which?

In all seriousness, one of the nice things about the second entry in this freshman series is that there was kind of a thematic through line. It wasn't heavy-handed, all that serious, or deep - nor should it have been - but it worked to tie things together and keep the group feeling like a cohesive unit. Speaking of unity, last week's episode was all about creating a team (it's why they wear ties!) which actually functioned really well within the structure an introductory pilot. It makes sense to spend time getting to know the team when the story itself is about solidifying one.
