Downloadable content is always most successful when it takes a game and characters that you know well and puts them in a new, ideally implausible setting – like Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare, or Borderlands' Zombie Island of Dr Ned. (It doesn't have to involve zombies, but hey, that's clearly been successful so far.) One-off "what-if" stories work best as bite-sized experiences, and DLC is ideal for that. Assassin's Creed 3's first add-on looks promising, on these criteria. It's an alternate-history story, and though it's set in the same beautiful snow-covered frontier that Assassin's Creed 3 brought to life last October, it sees you doing quite different things.
The Tyranny of King Washington campaign is split up into three episodes, each with about an hour and a half to two hours' worth of gameplay. Together, they make up one complete storyline; on its own, Episode One is only really a taster. For that reason, we're not going to score these episodes individually – we'll evaluate it as a whole, once the story's complete. The aim here is to let you know what's in the first episode and whether it's worth jumping in right now.
