Total War: Rome II Battlefield Runs Red with Blood & Gore DLC
Nov 1st 2013, 05:50, by Luke Reilly

A new downloadable add-on pack for Total War: Rome II will see the game turned into a veritable Roman bloodbath, infusing the gameplay with brutal new "decapitations, dismemberment and devastating impalements."

With hundreds of new "gruesome animations" and new sound effects, battles in Total War: Rome II will never be the same again, according to Sega. Gore now coats combatants and the ground will become soaked with blood.

Blood & Gore is available now for Rome II on Steam for USD$2.99 USD/£1.99 GBP/€2.49 EUR/AUD$3.99 AUD.

How Much Money Will Catching Fire Make in its Debut?
Nov 1st 2013, 04:55, by Lucy O'Brien

Lionsgate's Hunger Games sequel is generating enough interest that it looks like it will cross the $175 million mark in its debut, making it the second biggest three-day opening of all time after Marvel's The Avengers.

The prediction comes via The Hollywood Reporter, although the website also notes that Lionsgate insiders are being more conservative with their estimates, suggesting that the sequel may open in the $140-$150 million range. Still, sequels are big business, and the first Hunger Games opened to a massive $152.5 million in March 2012.

Indeed, the sequel needs to be bigger in every way: it's had a production budget of approx $130 million versus the original's $78 million.

Nintendo Suspends Swapnote Due to "Offensive Material"
Nov 1st 2013, 04:16, by Luke Reilly

Nintendo has disabled the ability for 3DS owners to send and receive Spotpass notes via Swapnote (or Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) after discovering some users have been using the service to transfer offensive material.

"Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material," reads a Nintendo statement on the company's website. "Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused."

Ubisoft Kills Online Pass System, Effective Immediately
Nov 1st 2013, 01:39, by Luke Reilly

Ubisoft has dropped its online pass system, effective immediately. The Uplay Passport code needed to unlock the online features of the recently-released Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will now be provided free-of-charge, and Uplay Passports will no longer be a part of any future Ubisoft games.

Like similar Online Pass systems, the Uplay Passport program required players to activate a unique code only available with new copies of the game. Secondhand purchasers, or those who had borrowed the game, would be required to purchase their own Uplay Passport for an additional fee.

Player feedback, however, has seen Ubisoft now shun the scheme.

"Assassin's Creed fans, we heard you loud and clear," writes communications manager Gary Steinman on the Ubisoft Blog.

The Avengers' Thanos is Like an "End Boss"
Nov 1st 2013, 01:25, by Lucy O'Brien

For those confused at the lack of Thanos in Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has some clarification for you. It seems that Thanos' appearance during The Avengers' credits was just the first of many teases, and in a way, one could liken him to an end boss of a video game.

"We never thought of it exactly like that, but I'd say that's... fair," said Feige, in response to the analogy posed by The Huffington Post. "It's also, you look at some classic story lines in the comics and they tease out characters like that -- big bads like that -- for sometimes years. I think Walter Simonson was teasing Surter for years before he popped up. It's fun to have the luxury to build somebody up like that."

The Walking Dead: First Look Image from Sunday's Episode
Nov 1st 2013, 01:25, by Eric Goldman

Ah, going for a supply run on The Walking Dead... That rarely goes well, does it? It certainly was tough, to say the least, in the Season 4 premiere, what with the zombies crashing through the ceiling and all. But still, when you need supplies, you need supplies, and so on this coming Sunday's new episode of The Walking Dead, a group sets out from the prison to a local college - only to run into multiple hurdles. But we'll see if this group's situation is prefferable to what's going on back at the prison, where things are getting worse.

We've got an exclusive image for you from the next episode of The Walking Dead, "Indifference," featuring Michonne on that aforementioned supply run. It certainly looks like something or someone is giving her pause - and not in a good way.

Saved by the Bell: The Complete Collection DVD Review
Nov 1st 2013, 01:02, by Eric Goldman

Morris. Powers. Kapowski. Slater. Turtle. Spano. Belding. Legends.

Is Saved by the Bell a good show? Not really. Is it an incredibly watchable show? Hell yes. Since 1989, the story of Zack Morris and his classmates has proven to be a continually popular and shockingly iconic piece of TV history. Whether you first saw it as a kid who looked up to the characters or as an older viewer who watched it all ironically, there was something about this show that struck a chord and many of us are likely way too familiar with these episodes than we should admit.

Considering how popular Saved by the Bell has continued to be through the years, it's surprising it took this long to get a complete series collection (in the US that is - Canada got one last year!). But yes, here it is at last, Season 1-5 of the series, in one box set. Though just how "complete" you consider this collection to be is debatable.

New Microsoft Privacy Statement Explains How Xbox One's Kinect Collects Data
Nov 1st 2013, 00:43, by Luke Reilly

In an updated privacy statement available to view here Microsoft has detailed how the Xbox One's Kinect will use any data it collects during play. Xbox One owners are advised details about your appearance gleaned from Kinect's facial recognition technology will be totally private, but are also reminded not to expect any level of privacy while chatting over the service.

In order to use the camera to sign you in, Kinect "measures distances between key points on your face to create a numeric value that represents only you." This information stays on your console and is not shared. The value itself is stored as a "very long set of numbers" and, according to Microsoft, "

The Simpsons to Pay Tribute to Marcia Wallace
Nov 1st 2013, 00:46, by Lucy O'Brien

Fox and the producers of The Simpsons will pay tribute to Marcia Wallace and her character Mrs Krabappel this Sunday in the United States.

The network is going to replace a re-run of American Dad at 7:30 pm with the classic Simpsons ep 'Bart the Lover', which was the first episode to really explore Edna as a character outside of Bart's classroom. That will be followed by an all new episode, '4 Regrettings and a Funeral,' which will close with a tribute card honouring Wallace.

Wallace passed away October 25.  In 1992, she won the Emmy as outstanding voice actress in 1992 for her performance as Springfield Elementary School's most sardonic teacher.

George Romero Turned Down The Walking Dead
Nov 1st 2013, 00:03, by Lucy O'Brien

George 'Night of the Living Dead' Romero turned down the offer to direct episodes of The Walking Dead, claiming it was was more "soap opera" than zombie TV show.

"They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead but I didn't want to be a part of it," Romero told The Big Issue. "Basically it's just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism and I find that missing in what's happening now."

Romero is commonly acknowledged to be the 'godfather' of the zombie movie, ushering the horror sub genre into mainstream consciousness through his Night of the Living Dead series.

Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #2 Review
Oct 31st 2013, 04:50, by Benjamin Bailey

trial of the punisher 02We all love it when a plan comes together, but sometimes it's nice when there's a bit more to the plan. For instance, Punisher: Trial of the Punisher #2 reveals Frank's master plan and, if you read the first issue, you can probably guess what it is. It makes sense, sure, but I can't be the only one hoping there was a little bit more to it. Things happen so fast and everything falls into place so easily in those last few pages that it's a almost a letdown. Don't get me wrong, this is still a good comic book, but it could have been a great comic.

Powerpuff Girls #2 Review
Oct 31st 2013, 04:01, by Joshua Yehl

tumblr_mv8l0aJuSi1rojbapo1_1280I'm not going to lie, the first issue of this newly launched Powerpuff Girls series totally depressed me. Mojo Jojo has decided he wants to take Antidote X to revert back to a normal monkey so he will no longer remember how badly he's been beaten by the Powerpuff Girls. That's some heavy stuff for IDW to produce for children, and this issue only gets heavier when Mojo pretty much gets his last rights and then the gas chamber. Artist/writer Troy Little does a near-perfect job with the art and characterization, but all of this issue's fun moments are tinged with an unexpected existential sadness. Does that make it a bad comic book? Surprisingly, no.

Swamp Thing Annual #2 Review
Oct 31st 2013, 04:04, by Joshua Yehl

SWAMP_TH_ANN_2_quyap18pok_Charles Soule is on fire with his Swamp Thing run and with this oversized issue he creates a whole new layer to the already expansive mythology of the Green. He uses every single panel of every single page to add more depth to the Green and more character to Alec Holland. With Javier Pina on art providing one breathtakingly beautiful piece of imagery after another, Swamp Thing Annual #2 becomes a lesson in how to do a comic book right. This issue does cost $4.99 for its extra pages, but it's so good I would have paid double.
