Look, this wasn't the deepest or most emotional Clone Wars story. There wasn't a lot of nuance to it and it really was all set up, as Darth Maul and Pre Vizsla made a mutually beneficial partnership that neither intended to honor in the long run. But two things helped it. One, it was on the heels of the WAC/Gascon storyline I think most fans are glad to be done with. And two, it certainly delivered a whole lot of cool packed into 22 minutes.
You could argue it was the ultimate fan service storyline. Darth Maul! Savage Opress! Death Watch! Black Sun! Mustafar! Jabba! But damn, if it wasn't fun and exciting to see all these elements play off one another.
