Why are all the best Before Watchmen books wrapping up the soonest? With Silk Spectre and now Minutemen wrapped up, my general interest in the Before Watchmen line is fading quickly. But at least Darwyn Cooke sticks the landing in Minutemen #6. The issue sidesteps what initially appears to be a poor storytelling choice and closes out the story in suitably grim fashion.
This issue sees Hollis Mason wrap up his extended flashback with only one loose end still to address -- the fate of Hooded Justice. The enigmatic hero took a very dark turn in the previous issue when it was revealed he may have been the one responsible for the kidnappings that Silhouette obsessed over before her murder. Cooke expertly builds tension towards the final showdown between Nite-Owl and Hooded Justice, so it's a bit strange when said showdown is over in a handful of panels. I feared the series would end on a resoundingly anti-climactic note.
