Falling Skies: "Strange Brew" Review

Well, that was a trip. The first twenty minutes of "Strange Brew" caught me completely by surprise. It wasn't that I had completely bought into the strange reality that had opened the episode; it just felt completely out of place after the energetic conclusion of "The Pickett Line." For a while there I wasn't sure if the screeners I received had been mislabeled and I was watching the episodes out of order. Nevertheless, those first twenty minutes were – different.

We've seen virtual reality used as a plot device for interrogation in science fiction for decades, so Karen's plan to trick Tom into believing he had returned to his life pre-invasion was nothing original or surprising. These dream/VR sequences tend to add very little to the overall plot, as nothing occurring within their context is necessarily relevant. It is however an opportunity to see a lot of the characters out of their usual element which can be a nice change of pace. Also, it was a great excuse to bring back Dai for one scene.
