The Bridge: "Calaca" Review

"Calaca" starts by answering the only cliffhanger left by the pilot: what's behind that door, Charlotte? Well, it turns out to be a big ol' tunnel to Mexico (complete with a shrine that sends her running), where her late husband Carl had been running illegals with the help of Cesar, his trusty right-hand man. We knew Charlotte would be doing more than simply languishing around her estate, but it's nice to have her storyline get way more interesting as soon as the second episode hits the ground.

It's also nice to see The Bridge immediately expanding its world beyond the two cops at the center of the story. Already we're skipping around from law enforcement on both sides of the border to the media to the hopeful immigrants to people getting wealthy off their backs and beyond. The obvious comparison is to The Wire, which shows tremendous ambition that even if they can't live up to already makes The Bridge much more than just a whodunit.
