The second of the two-in-one night episodes of The Office saw some relationships being tested in the manner that supports the close of the series: with humor, in a way that makes sense for the characters and that illuminates an as yet unrevealed side to them; and a few being effectively "undone" after years of investment. The Jim-and-Darryl-as-roommates storyline served a couple of purposes. First, it revealed Darryl as a persnickety neat-nick, which works for him overall, and Jim as "a sloppy homeless hobo." The turn for Jim felt a bit left-field, and I suspect that show was simply utilizing the set-up as a device to establish both be and Darryl in this new life in Philadelphia, as well as to illustrate the part of Jim that is craving his bachelor existence. He is, seemingly, getting more-and-more out of touch with his family. When "taking care of the people you care about" become "roommate-rules # 1," we know he's sort of lost it.
