Warning: Spoilers for "The Fall" follow...
The Following has consistently been one of the more challenging shows to review. At this point it's unclear whether it makes more sense to tap out entirely, or go all in. The show goes further off-the-rails with each passing week, becoming more farcical, less grounded and yet in some ways more entertaining. The trouble is, I'm not certain that it knows why it's entertaining. Are we laughing with it, or at it?
Last week's episode dialed up both the action and the ludicrousness. This week took that to an 11. The good news is that it was the glum and mopey nature of The Following that was holding it back, rather than the silliness. For a time it really felt as though Ryan Hardy was the Eeyore of the FBI. When he kicked back (at gunpoint) and said, "Oh wow, this is interesting" in reference to the followers three complex romance, it was the most alive and engaged we've seen Bacon be on the show to date.
