If you haven't read the first volume of Royden Lepp's epic adventure Rust, then you are missing out. It's heartfelt and fun, with the kind of strong characterization and story beats that are usually reserved for classic literature. Indeed, one of the greatest strengths of Rust is that it feels familiar; the kind of story you would have read and loved as kid. This second volume, Rust: Secrets of the Cell, doesn't quite live up to the high bar set by its predecessor, but it still manages to capture the qualities that made the first volume so magical.
The second volume picks up right where the first ended, on a small farm in place not too unlike rural America, except with robots and jetpacks. We get some more insight into Jet Jones' past and his purpose. In fact, Jet Jones takes center stage here, which has its positive and negatives. The story loses some of its human element, but Jet Jones, the little jetpack wearing robot, has always been the most interesting character. What he lacks in emotion and characterization, he makes up for in sheer awesomeness.
