Do you remember a time before ocarina playing mini-games and protracted Triforce fetch quests? A time when we didn't have to endure a developer's attempts to weave a superfluous narrative (which we ultimately wouldn't care about anyway) just to get our next dungeon fix? I sure remember, and so does Creat Studios, whose latest PS3 release, Labyrinth Legends, offers up an enjoyable, if somewhat brief return to an era where all we needed was another dungeon to crawl.
The only storytelling you'll get from Labyrinth Legends comes in the form of two 30-second cutscenes – one at the beginning, and one at the end. Some evil jerkface of a mage kidnapped your wife on your wedding day, giving you the only motivation you really need to go forth and kill the bad guys until they die from it. Sure, it's a well-worn, even simplistic premise, but it functions exactly as intended: to get you playing and then get out of your way. Every element of the game shares this design focus, leaving you free to do what you came to do: hack, slash, and solve puzzles.
