With the film version of stage musical Les Miserables making a mint at the box office and poised for Oscar glory next month, now seems as good-a-time-as-any to pick a few more shows crying out for big-screen treatment.

First Staged: 2003

Stand-Out Song: The Internet is for Porn

A laugh-riot from start to finish, Avenue Q plays like a stoned and sexed up version of Sesame Street. Featuring both puppets and human characters interacting with each other, the story follows the efforts of recent college graduate Princeton to make something of his life. He starts out by renting an apartment on Avenue Q, where he befriends a banker, a slacker, an unemployed comedian, a teacher and a recluse who spends his days surfing the world-wide-web for filth (and delivering the show's most memorable song, 'The Internet is for Porn'). The musical also features a character called Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and tackles themes of sexism, racism and homophobia. A smash-hit since it debuted Off-Broadway in 2003, Avenue Q won three Tonys and has played all over the world. And by using a little of the Muppet magic to remove the puppeteers who appear in the stage version, the transition to film should be effortless. Though we have no idea who they'd cast as Gary Coleman.
